Sensory Integration Foundations for Participation

This introductory workshop provides an overview of Ayres Sensory Integration® theory, assessment, and intervention. Participants will learn how sensory integrative foundations contribute to participation in occupations, how to use available assessment tools to assess these functions, and how to design individually tailored interventions.

Current research will be shared as well as resources for advocacy. Participants will leave this interactive workshop with tools they can immediately apply to support their practice.

  • This course is intended for Occupational Therapists, but is open to all interested in learning more about Ayres Sensory Integration.

  • Following this course learners will be able to:

    1) Introduce and describe core features of the Sensory Integration frame of reference

    2) Understand Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) theory and identify patterns of sensory integrative challenges

    3) Define key constructs e.g., sensory reactivity and sensory perception

    4) Recognize and provide at least 3 examples of how sensory integrative strengths and challenges influence occupation and participation

    5) Identify assessments to assess sensory integrative functions and interpretation of assessment data to develop occupation-centered goals

    6) Design at least one individually tailored intervention based on assessment data

    7) Discuss the wealth of evidence for ASI and consider how to advocate for this approach with stakeholders. Identify one action plan after the course
